The Masgutova Method®

of Neuro-Sensory-Motor and Reflex Integration has its origins in a different way of thinking

Dr.Svetlana Masgutova

 Svetlana Masgutova, Ph. D., a Russian psychologist currently living in Poland and the US, has based her method on the work done from the 1920’s to 1950’s by Russian physiologists I. Pavlov and I. Sechenov: neurophysiologists, A. Uhtomsky, N. Bernstein and P. Anokhin; and psychologist L. Vygotsky.

Plan of the lecture:

  1. 1.      Theory

Review: Definition of a Reflex.

1.1. Levels of a Reflex Integration (10-15 min.):

  • Reflex circuit components

  • Reflex integration on level of its neurostructural aspect and protection task

  • Integration of the unconditioned and conditioned patterns

  • Integration of conditioned reflex pattern and sensory-motor abilities and skills

1.2. Reflex Maturation and Reflex Integration Disorder in Spinal Galant and Perez reflex patterns.Case Discussion- example of autism influence (10-15 min.).

2. Parent Practicum/Training: How to work/exercise my child/adult in need? (Go to video on-line with membership: http://www.MasgutovaMethod.com)

2.1. The Spinal Galant Reflex (15 min.).

2.2. The Spinal Perez Reflex (10 min.).

– Definition. Chronology. Cases of dysfunctional and non-integrated reflexes (autism, CP, other).

– Practical demonstration of the basic and variant exercises.

– Rules of work with children with hypotonicity and hypertonicity (autism, CP, other)

– Home work to follow with your child (steps and exercises).

2.3. Preparation for discussion of results of your work with your child at home: did you manage to work out the exercise/s, to establish good cooperation? What challenges did you have. What point can you give for your own work? Give reasons, please.

 The Hands Pulling Reflex
 The Babkin Palmomental Reflex
 The Foot Babinski Reflex

Topic: Reflex Integration vs. Reflex Inhibition:

1)     What Reflex is considered to be matured?

2)     What are levels of a Reflex Integration?

3)     What levels of the nervous system does reflex formation affect? What are the strategies of different level of nervous system/brain?

4)     How a reflex can impact the brain development and learning?

5)     How a reflex can impact the development of the lower motor neurons and extrapyramidal nervous system?

6)     How a reflex can impact the Brain Development and learning?

7)     What is the effect of the reflex maturation on the basal ganglia functions and self-regulation?

8)     Why the reflexes integration vs. inhibition is the most productive way for work with reflex development. Why reflex inhibition is not a safe tool? Give the example based on work with ATNR and Moro.

9)     How a reflex definition does help to organize the exercises?

1. What is the definition of the Hands Pulling reflex? What is a sensory stimulus? What is the motor response?

2. What is the time for its integration? What are the signs of its integration?

3. What ways does the Hands Pulling reflex support the development of motor skills, behavior and cognitive processes?

4. What are consequences of the incorrect and retained Hands Pulling reflex?

5. What are results of the Hands Pulling check in your child? Was the sequence of flexion: “Elbows -> Head-> Core” correct in your child?

6. What are main exercises for correction/integration of the Hands Pulling reflex? Please, tell about rules and instructions for the work with Hands Pulling reflex pattern.

 

B. The Babkin Palmomental Reflex

1. What is the definition of the Babkin reflex? What is a sensory stimulus? What is the motor response?

2. What is the time for its integration? What are the signs of its integration?

3. What ways does the Babkin reflex support the development of motor skills, behavior and cognitive processes?

4. What are consequences of the retained Babkin reflex? How Babkin does affect eating and speech functions?

5. What is specific in the Babkin pattern in your child?

6. What are main exercises for correction/integration of the Babkin reflex? Please, tell about rules and instructions for the work with this reflex pattern.

 

C. The Foot Babinski Reflex
